ABOUT US

Welcome! Living life in the beautiful Pennsylvania mountains. From the flowers and the gardens to the home and homestead. We are creating a beautiful farm life.

I’m Megan- gardener, backyard homesteader, homemaker, and multi-generation western Pennsylvanian. Country gal at heart, I love my Lord, my family, my flowers, my animals, and my books.

I grew up with memories of my grandpa with his Charleis cattle and vegetable garden, my grandma with her flowers and kindness, and my mom with sewing projects and the farm cats.

My love of agriculture and country living stems from this, leading me to my own small, yet productive homestead with my husband.

Who We Are

I’m Megan, the girl behind the blooms, muck boots, and the farmhouse. Garden lover. Book worm. Farm girl.

My husband, Shawn, is the backbone to our homestead, taking my visions to reality. Woodsman. Redneck. Bird Dog Guy.

Our Mission

We believe in building a life centered on faith, family, and farm.

My husband and I may not have the farmstead of our dreams, but God has us where He needs us to be in this season of our lives – on our few acres gardening, hunting, and loving every day.

What We Do

Farmette in Bloom is a Pennsylvanian homestead in the Allegheny Plateau where the Alleghenies meet the PA Wilds.

I grew up in the countryside, while my husband grew up in the hilly woodside. We are building our homestead- not quite in the Alleghenies, not quite in the PA Wilds.

Growing Up a Farm Kid

In my childhood years, my mom would take us down the road to the family farm where she grew up on.

This is where my Bloom grandparents lived, and where us country kids would climb round bales, play games outdoors in the backyard, or eat some fresh picked sweet corn for a summertime supper.

Skills Past Down from My Maternal Side

Through the years, my mom and grandmother introduced me to some homemaking skills for living on a farm.

At 16, my mom taught me how to sew, and next thing she knew I got some old unused fabric and a shower curtain and sewed my first dress, without buying a pattern.

My mom let me buy some cross-stitching kits at Dollar General, never realizing she was creating a future needlepoint enthusiast.

Gaining Homesteading Experience

Additionally, we cared for our music teachers’ chickens, ducks, geese, fish, cats, and dogs while they enjoyed a vacation.

My love for backyard animals began, and only grew when we took in their chickens, ducks, and geese whenever they moved out of state.

The Gardener’s Story

Growing flowers and gardening were always a part of my life. I remember my pap cutting up a fresh green garden pepper for me to try as a young kid and being in the garden trying cherry tomatoes for the first time- even though they’re not my favorite by the way- and still aren’t.

But this love of gardening and fresh food only exploded when I met my future husband in June 2015. We were 19 and 20. One kid working full time as a machinist at the same place he started at during his high school co-op years; one kid finishing her first year of college taking 200- and 300-level courses on the path to graduating a year early.

Two kids with family farming backgrounds, loving the outdoors, and having ambitions to achieve great goals in life.

Just one country boy arriving with a bouquet of wildflowers to see his country girl.

After a few years, we married in June 2019, moving to a temporary home in Mahaffey in the mountains where only backroad riders and hunters could find our home in the middle-of-nowhere.

By April 2021, we found our homestead in Grampian. From here, we’ve built homes for our chickens and ducks,
a home for all my plants and seeds, a place for our agricultural equipment, and a place for our woofers.

This is the place we call home.
