Inside the Farmhouse

My house wasn’t built in 1803 or 1903, but rather 2003. The house I grew up in and the houses I learned my homemaking skills were all built in the mid-1900’s. The actual farmhouse on my family’s farm was from the 1800’s, but after years of nobody living in it, it became the old farmhouse.

I think that one can seek farmhouse living without using specifically farmhouse décor, in either a traditionally designed 19’th century farmhouse or today’s modern farmhouse style.

And as romanticized as farmhouse living is, we tend to forget about the country family décor of muck boots next to the back door, the cast iron skillets that may not have a good storage home, the random tools on a shelf, a table, a counter, and more bits of dirt, dog fur, and paw prints than one might not know what to do with.

Décor of fresh cut flowers from the garden, the basket of fresh eggs straight from the chicken that day, or the dog fur from when a woofer came in to visit for some pets or toys. A homemade bookshelf with books on faith, food, and gardening; piles of holistic and homeopathic books tucked away on a desk. Frost bitten chickens, injured ducks in an Epsom salt bath, and young seedlings may liven up the home for a few hours, days, or weeks.

It’s life living in a house on a farm.

In my early 21’st century ranch style farmhouse, this is the place where I make some homemade meals, help with the butchering process of deer and pheasants, treat my family and animals with homeopathic and holistic remedies, complete craft projects, and enjoy life with my favorite books and my cross-stitching.
